Bell, whose wife and mother were deaf, was a leader in, and lifelong advocate for, deaf education. Bell mentored Helen Keller’s teacher, Anne Sullivan, throughout her lifetime and recommended the school where she taught, the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts, to Helen’s parents.

Library of Congress, Alexander Graham Bell family papers
Bell first professed his love for Mabel in this long letter, putting his thoughts to words in case she started crying and could not read his lips. He closed by promising to change everything about himself that she disliked, writing, “I wish to amend my life for you.”
